This Is How We Covid

This is what having Covid looked like for the boys. :) Swimming, video games, sleeping in, and picking warm tomatoes from the vine. Gid's favorite snacks lately are tomatoes. :)

We had a slightly different Easter this year. We were all sick with Covid. Owen started us off  with a slight cough, then Gideon had a cough and fever for a couple days, then Luke and I got the fever and chills, and finally Dave got what seemed like a chest cold. Luke had to stay home from school because of the flu symptoms. When I called the school they required a negative Covid test before he could return. We went to a nearby drive-through testing station in Apache Junction. Swab up the nose, 0 out of 5 stars, do not recommend.  The next morning we got our results. POSITIVE.

I was not expecting that! We've gone an entire year without contracting the virus and right at the end when things are getting back to 'normal' we get sick! What are the odds. I thought we had some sort of genetic immunity since no one in my immediate family has had it. My grandparents have had it and several aunts/uncles. Uncle Blake passed away from it a few months ago. It destroyed his lungs. Aunt Linda came down and stayed with my mom for a week. She needed support from someone who has lost their husband and mom knows all about that. It's not an experience you would wish on anyone, but it did teach us empathy and that's something I am grateful for.

Once Luke and I had a positive test, we had to call the Elementary & High School. Owen and Gideon had to come home immediately and Dave left work after he got tested at the hospital. His test came back negative, but a few days later when he started having syptoms he tested again. POSITIVE. Owen and Gideon had to have tests as well. POSITIVE & POSITIVE. What. the. heck. We were 5 for 5. We quarantined for 2 weeks. It was wasn't so bad since we've had to quarantine a couple times before. We're very good at the whole staying away from people. ;)

The boys did their homework remotely. Gid was slammed with worksheets, but he worked his tail off and was so dedicated. He finished the entire stack. I was so so impressed and proud of him. That was not an easy thing to do and it took hours each day. His teacher was really happy with his efforts, too.

I got hit the hardest with Covid. It was miserable, but at least I didn't end up in the hospital like so many have. Which is surprising considering Luke and I have asthma and a lot of cases involved lung problems. We were extremely blessed in that way. It felt like the worst flu of my life. The back aches were an absolute nightmare. It was a constant painful ache in my lower back. I slept a lot. I had to be on ibuprofen if I wanted to be comfortable. Lost my taste and smell for a few days at the end. Had the worst taste in my mouth, like bitter, raw aloe vera. Dave had a really bad chest cold and lost his smell/taste too. He still says he can smell and taste things half way.

We all just layed around the house. Reached a level of laziness we've never experienced and it was kind of the best. Dave didn't have to leave the house at 5:30 every morning so we got to sleep in til 8am *gasp*. The boys played a lot of video games. Dave and I played a lot of mindless games on the phone and laptop. We ate whatever, whenever. Watched movies. Polished their knives. Played with LoLo. Swam. Living the dream for 2 weeks.

While we were in quarantine we watched General Conference. Dave ordered each of the boys a lego set to work on. Owen looked like a dancing banana and of course they picked the loudest sleeping bags in the house. actually the attic. Owen climbed up through the garage ceiling to bring these down. We made it through Saturday really well and the boys swam between sessions. Sunday was less successful, but we're all on different levels right? Spiritual levels. Patience levels. Energy levels. I can't sit for another minute levels. Oh yah, and I made monkey bread. So much better and easier than the traditional cinnamon rolls!

Easter morning we had a treat! The Seely's showed up at our front door and made us homemade pancakes right there on the sidewalk! With homemade buttermilk syrup to top them off. They left them by the front door since we were socially distancing. We're so blessed by good friends and family. My mom drove out early that morning too. She left a giant basket full of Easter goodies at our doorstep. I was feeling all the grateful emotions mixed with a lack of sleep. It was so nice to be remembered. I actually had enough energy to make an Easter meal. I think we ate at 3 or something. Crockpot ham, green beans, broccoli salad, banana cream pie is all I remember. I ordered our groceries online and had them delivered for the first time. It's a really common thing during the pandemic, but we've never done it. Obviously. My phone gave me a notification that the groceries were at our door. Excitedly open the door and see nothing. Look at the neighbors' front doors, no groceries. Look on my order and realized they delivered to our old address. Thankfully not in Kansas City! Just across the street at the townhomes. It felt very sneaky stealing our own groceries from someone else's porch. Quite the adventure. It's always something. :)

The portable cooktop they brought was acting up and they were using a new cast iron skillet that took forever to heat up. So I had time to paint this little thank you card for them while they were out flipping pancakes.

Confetti eggs were in the Easter basket from mom. :)
